poetry and fiction creative writing

Creative writing workshops for poetry and fiction writers working manuscripts towards publication will be offered by Erudite Scribe’s Principal Writer and Editor Andrew Leggett at the Innovation Centre on the University of the Sunshine Coast campus at Sippy Downs throughout 2013.  Workshops may also be offered in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, subject to sufficient interest.  The first whole day poetry manuscript workshop will be offered on Saturday 2nd March from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.  The first whole day fiction manuscript workshop will follow five weeks later on Saturday 13th April from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.  The fee for the full day workshops will be $110.00 per participant, payable in advance on receipt of a Paypal Invoice.  Entry will be limited to a maximum of 8 participants.

Particpants should have at least 40 pages of a poetry or fiction manuscript in first draft form and be prepared to discuss their overall project with peer participants and the facilitator, and come prepared with three poems or approximately 4000 words of prose to be edited and discussed in the group.

The focus of these intensive creative writing workshops will be to work poetry and fiction manuscripts to a standard of readiness to submit to manuscript competitions such as the Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Award, the Queensland Literary Awards Emerging Queensland Writer fiction manuscript competition,, Interactive Publications IP Picks Series in poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction, The John Knight Memorial Poetry Manuscript Prize, soon to be announced on this site (watch our blog space for entry forms and conditions), the Australian/Vogel Literary Award (fiction manuscripts by Australian writers under 35); The Whitmore Press Poetry Manuscript Prize, The Scribe Prize (for a fiction manuscript by an Australian writer over 35), and the Press Press poetry Chapbook Award

The first two of these manuscript competitions are open only to Australian writers resident in Queensland.  All of the others are national competitions open to all Australian citizens and permanent residents.  Each of them awards book publication to the winning entrant, and some also offer substantial cash prizes.

Similar workshops will be run at approximately three monthly intervals, subject to expressions of interest.  Please register your expression of interest now for the Saturday 2nd March Creative Writing Workshop (Poetry) or the Saturday 13th April Creative Writing Workshop (Fiction) in the inquiry box provided on this page, providing phone contact details as well as your email address.  Participants will be required to supply the facilitator at least a week in advance with an electronic copy of the manuscript sample that you will bring to the group, with written permission to send the sample on to the other group participants, who should print the manuscripts they receive and bring copies of all of them on the day.
